The Chat Manager
The Chat Manager is a Win32
application. After installing the chat server, in the c:\chatterbox
directory, as well as on the desktop should be an icon that looks
like:
double-click on it to
bring up the Chat Manager. If there is no icon on the desktop,
you will find the Chat Manager in the c:\chatterbox folder. If the Chat Manager appears and then
disappears after just a second or two, or if it comes up as a blank
grey screen, there are likely 2 causes for this:
- The Chat Server is not
running. If you are running NT/2000 go to the services control
panel and ensure that the chat server is started. See Chapter 1 for
more information.
- The Chat Server is unable
to bind to port 443. This may be due to IIS or another personal web
server already running on the same machine. Note: Even if you do
not have IIS configured for SSL, it will still bind to and tie up
port 443. The simplest work around is to start the Chat Server
service prior to starting IIS. If the server is not able to start,
in c:\chatterbox\server.log you will find an entry that looks like:
CChatServer::InitNetwork: Unable to bind to port 443

The status screen shows
basic status information. If the Server Last Started field
shows stopped, then the server is not running. More than
likely this is a license issue. You can also send a system
message from that status screen. This is designed for
emergency broadcast type messages.
The next screen is the license screen.

To request your license key, click on
"Request License". After we have issued a key, you can click on
"Update License" to download the license to the server. The chat
server attempts to refresh the key information every hour or so. If
for some reason the server is unable to contact the license server
for an extended period of time, it will shutdown. In this case the
"Server Last Started" field will show stopped. Click on "Update
License" to re-attempt the connection.
The next screen is the room
configuration screen.
Click here for detailed information on room configuration.
The next screen shows
information about
users:

The active users screen shows, sorted by
room and alias the users in each room, the version they are using,
their internet delay measured in milliseconds (ms) and their buffer
depth. The chat server will buffer important data to ensure that no
packets are lost over poor connections. Voice Data is not considered
important, and is not buffered.
The next screen, performance
is currently no used for anything.
The next screen is the
logging screen. This screen allows you to select certain logging
options in case of troubleshooting. These options will be given you
by tech support.
Finally is the
system screen:

This shows
miscellaneous parameters necessary to the operation of the server.

The chat manager can be run
remotely to manage the server from a remote location. To do this
perform the following steps:
